A really dumb book about premature ejaculation

I feel quite conflicted about this short novella about a couple’s first night together following their wedding. Essentially due to them both being virgins, their first sexual encounter is a disaster, with the man prematurely ejaculating and the woman revolted by the visceral outcome. This single encounter results in them dissolving their marriage less than a day after the wedding.

The opening lines of the novel intriguingly summarise:

“They were young, educated, and both virgins in this, their wedding night, and they lived in a time when conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible.”

It is fascinating to read about people who, despite exisiting within my lifetime, are completely ignorant to introspection – I just take it for granted that my thoughts can be explored and shared with others. This was probably the hardest aspect of the novel to believe – that in a time of psychoanalysis, coming after great works of poetry and art dealing with emotion, sensuality and desire, that a single event should become unsurpassable to resolution though honest and forthright discussion.

It’s just dumb.
